The true-life story of a drug addict
My name is itumeleng selepe and I am an ex drug addict, I spent 11 years of my life addicted to mostly coke and cat, I used these two drugs constantly and interchangeably for that period. At one point in my life was a career driven professional with a proper job in a cooperate environment which I spoiled in seconds with one job which lasted 10 minutes, I was hired and fired within those 10 minutes because it was discovered that I was high. I have worked for reputable companies with my background being in media which is rife with substance abuse.
I kicked the habit on the 25th of July 2015 and haven’t looked back since.
I went to my first rehab where I spent four weeks but 10 minutes later after my parents paid R 48 000 I was high, and it is on the basis of this that I established the organisation called WOTS (WORD ON THE STREET) which helps addicts kick the habit, we have thus far had an impressively high success rate.
As an organization we have also realized that indeed prevention is better than cure and thus we have endeavored to not only focus on addicts, but to also focus on the youngsters in underprivileged communities who are in fact at risk of adopting this drug lifestyle, we have started developing plays and actually performing them in Gauteng, and we would also like to carry out this project in Limpopo as well, more especially in Phalaborwa which is my home town and has also been seen to have a great deal of substance abuse issues that it grapples with.
